DirectX
From Computing Knowledgebase
DirectX is a layer of API's designed to make a common set of commands for All Graphics Cards. Before DirectX, all Video Game manufacturers had to program specific instructions for specific Graphics Cards, adding much time to the overall development process. DirectX was designed to eliminate that excess time by providing a common set of instructions that all Graphics Card Manufacturers, such as ATI and nVIDIA, have to abide by.
The next step for DirectX is WGF, or Windows Graphics Foundation. DirectX itself has gone through many versions, except for Version 4, which was never shipped.
