The Master File Table in the NTFS file system is roughly akin to the File Allocation Table used on FAT Volumes. NTFS is used in Windows NT/2000/XP/2003, and provides numerous advantages over FAT32. The MFT makes an index of each file and its attributes for an organized way of accessing the files (Think of is as a database table). It also supports the ability to fall back on at least three other copies of itself scattered on the Hard Drive.
